Guangdong Poison
Control Center (GDPCC), administered by the Hospital for
Occupational Diseases Control of Guangdong Province, has been the
National Poison Control Center, Guangdong province branch since
December 29,1997.
Mission and function
The mission of GDPCC is to
reduce the morbidity and mortality due to poisoning through the
measures of prevention and treatment. To support this mission,
the center has a wide range of functions as follows:
·Response and investigation for chemical
accidents
·Diagnosis and therapy of poisoning diseases
·Information collection on chemical toxicants
and antidotes
·Chemical analysis and toxicological test
·Scientific research on poisoning-related
subjects
·Training and education on occupational safety
and health promotion
·24-hour hot line on duty and free consultation
Organization and management structure
·General office
·Department of Logistics
·Clinical Department
·Laboratory of Toxicological Test
·Laboratory of Chemical Analysis
Personnel and equipments
There are 242 scientists in
the Center, including 43 high-ranking specialists (professors or
associate professors), 74 doctors or technicians in-charge. The
Center occupied an area of more than 20,000 m2 and has 200 beds
for inpatients in the ward. First-aid facilities are available
for emergency treatments, including intensive care unit
(equipped with ventilators, monitors and apparatus for
hemodialysis and hemoperfusion) and 4 ambulances (equipped with
mobile first-aid apparatus). In support of center's mission, the
laboratories are equipped with advanced apparatus for biological
and chemical analysis, including gas chromatograph/mass
selective detector, liquid chromatograph, atom-absorb
spectrophotometers, gas spectrophotometers, full automatic blood
biochemistry analyzer and so on.
Achievements
Since 1997,more than 400
cases of different kinds of chemical poisoning caused by
trichloroethylene, n-hexane, organo tin, hydrogen arsenide,
lead, mercury, vanadium pentoxide, bromomethane, benzene,
hydrogen sulfide,3-fluorophenol, cigua-toxic fish, insecticide
and rodenticide have been successfully cured in the Center,
including 3 case of taking more than 40 ampules of
fluoroacetamide and a case of hydrogen arsenide poisoning with
acute renal failure and anuria for more than 60 days. Some
severe cases of chemical poisoning such as more than 60 cases of
aplastic anemia caused by benzene poisoning, and about 70 cases
of trichloroethylene exfoliative dermatitis were saved, also
more than 60 cases of rodenticide poisoning were rescued since
the Center was established with a zero mortality rate for
rodentcide poisoning.
The GDPCC believes that her
professional work on preventing and treating disease, injury and
disability caused by chemical poisoning not only can save
lives and promote health but also can reduce the cost of social
health care.
